A store associate has to scratch the coupon to reveal what the prize is so they’re expecting you to go and shop and then get it scratched at the checkout, but every previous year I had an associate do it when I walked in the store so I was able to buy something for the exact amount that my coupon was worth.

Check your newspaper for circulars from local retailers. Some may have similar offers as those above. Large furniture stores and other stores for large ticket items might have free food.

The word FREE is one of the most effective words used in marketing, even though most promotions that use the word are not actually free. The ones above are actually free. The following are NOT actually free:
- Anything that says “buy one get one free”.
- Anything that says “free with purchase of . . .”
- Most rewards programs (without tweaking or combining with coupons)
- Walgreens Register Rewards (however, if you’re making purchases at Walgreens already, you could purchase these first and then purchase what you were going to purchase, then you get these items free with your purchase)
- Rite Aid Rewards
- CVS Extrabucks rewards
- Kohl’s Cash
- Sears Rewards
- Office Max Rewards (Max Perk Rewards)
- Possibly Craft Warehouse get $10 back when you spend $10 or more on Nov 29.
- Free [store name] gift card when you buy [a featured product] (although, these could make very good deals and help with your Christmas budget)
- Free Phone with activation and/or 2 year contract.
- Free after upgrade rebate (this requires that you have the previous version of the software)
- IKEA’s “eat free” deal
Also, don’t get fooled by the word “save”. You’re only saving if you put money in a savings account in the bank. A sale doesn’t mean you save, because you’re spending money. You’re not saving; you’re only spending less, and that’s if you were already intending to purchase the item before it went on sale.
