Free Transportation – Free Car, Free Bike & Free Public Transit
This page includes all information on AF.c related to free transportation, including how to get a free car or free public transportation. As new information is discovered it will be added to this page and other appropriate areas of the site.
Free Public Transportation
Students at institutions of higher education are often given free public transportation, especially when the school has inadequate parking for all of their students. If you’re a student then check to see if your school offers it.
On certain days of the year, your city’s public transportation system might offer free rides to anyone. This could be done for multiple reasons, such as reducing vehicle emissions, increasing tourism, giving the public a chance to try the system, or a PR effort by a specific sponsor. Check with the website of your city’s public transportation system.
Sometimes the cards that are used for ticket fare are discarded, either purposefully or accidentally. You can find these cards and use them, just like other loose change or valuables. The systems for loading cash onto the card are more friendly in some cities than in others. AF.c is always looking for resources that would allow people to get refunds, even small refunds, or allow them to combine “spare change” from multiple cards into one. If you have any related information, please let us know.
You can potentially get a free ride through a carpool or ride share. Carpools and ride shares allow commuters to use the HOV lane and sometimes even use toll roads for free. It’s an arrangement that mutually benefits the driver and the passengers. Try Share The Ride to find a free ride.
You could potentially try to find a ride through Craigslist and similar sites. Take proper safety precautions when sharing a ride. For long road trips it might be courteous or even required by the driver for you to help with gas money.
Apps like Uber and Lyft may have coupon codes or first-time promotions that you can use to get a free ride. Competitor apps that are trying to gain a market share on these companies may offer even more free rides to gain attention.
Free Shuttle Services can be offered by a variety of companies and for many different reasons. One type of shuttle company offers services to the elderly and similar promotions can be found with them as with Uber and Lyft (special offers with coupon codes or first-time riders). Hotels and main tourist attractions often have free shuttle services to and from airports. For example, those with a layover in Salt Lake City can get a free ride to Temple Square in Downtown Salt Lake with their free shuttle service. Auto Repair Shops often have a free shuttle service that is included with their service.
On a related note: whether your car is getting repaired or if you’re traveling, you can get free rental car insurance and collision insurance as a credit card benefit. The car rental isn’t free, but at least the insurance is.
Free Car, Free Truck, Free Bike, Free Vehicle
Getting a free car isn’t always free, since cars may require maintenance and repairs. This could mean some costs, but sometimes it will be still be cheaper than buying a new car. Other times it won’t be cheaper, so you’ll have to make good choices in this regard. Obviously if you have auto repair skills then you will have more available options for getting a free vehicle.
Cars that are often in need of repairs may be given away on sites like Craigslist and similar sites.
Trading for free stuff in a process called arbitrage could be a way to buy a car with a paperclip. Local news reported a teenager in Los Angeles who was able to get a Porsche through a series of trades starting with a cell phone.
You could potentially win a car through a Sweepstakes or Contest, including TV Game Shows. This will not be entirely free because you’ll have to pay income tax on your winnings.
You could potentially leverage the outside space on your vehicle to collect advertising revenue which could pay for vehicle expenses. See Vehicle Billboard Advertising.
There are multiple jobs where you get paid to drive and many of them would include the vehicle. Even on jobs where the main description is not driving, you could be given a vehicle as a perk. See Perk Freebies.
You could offer to drive vehicles that are for sale. You won’t get to keep the car, but you’ll have free use of it. This benefits the owner who is selling the vehicle because it increases exposure and demonstrates that the vehicle is in good working condition, which helps to sell it.
Try going to a car dealership and asking if they have any “margin-less inventory”. This has not been tested by AF.c but it seems possible.
You could buy a car, use it and sell it for the same price so that you ultimately get it for free or nearly free. This involves studying the used car market to determine which vehicles have the highest appreciation after the first year and the fifth year. You’d buy the vehicle after the first point of depreciation and before the second point of depreciation for nearly the same price.
There are no known federal government programs that will give you a free vehicle, free transportation, or transportation benefits. There may local programs which are intended to improve the local economy. If you are a person in need, then check with your local State and City governments and their websites for things like “transportation benefits” or “transportation assistance”.
There are multiple charities that will give vehicle assistance to low-income individuals. You will need to prove financial need and you’ll still have to pay for vehicle insurance.
One creative way to get free vehicles is to create and own a non-profit so that people can donate vehicles as a tax write-off.
By any definition, bikes are also vehicles, and they are given away for free all the time on sites like Craigslist. A bike is not always a practical method of transportation depending on the weather and how far you have to commute. But where it is practical, it’s much, much cheaper.
Free Gas, Free Fuel
Fuel and maintenance costs are a reality even if you can get the car for free. Yet, if you can also get free fuel that would help your budget even more.
You could potentially get free gas from a sweepstakes.
Theoretically, if you convert your vehicle to run on cooking oil, you can get free used cooking oil from local restaurants. AF.c is still investigating how practical this is. See also Free Energy.
You can get a bike for free on places like Craigslist, and that doesn’t require any fuel.
